Everything You Need to Know

What are AP courses?

AP courses are rigorous, college-level courses that students take to make their college applications more competitive. Courses are designed to be consistent with the College Board's guidelines. Students who complete the College Board’s course equivalent AP Exam with a passing score may have the opportunity to receive college credit before entering college.

Funding

The LAU School LAND Trust committee has allotted funds to cover the entire cost of up to three UC Scout AP courses per semester for eligible students in grades 11-12. Courses are $399 each per semester. If you do the math, the potential savings is big!

Course Structure

Course material is broken into two 16-week semesters (Semester 1 and Semester 2), much like a two-semester introductory college-level class (exceptions are noted in the course list below). Both semesters should be completed to properly prepare for the AP Exam.

Pacing

Students are responsible for setting their own pace to ensure coursework is completed within the 16-week semester and UC Scout’s Course Start and End Dates

Format

UC Scout AP courses are on-demand and self-paced. Course materials, including pre-recorded video lectures, assignments, tests, quizzes, midterms, and final exams, are completed online asynchronously.

Grading & High School Credit

Final grades for AP courses are recorded on high school and AP transcripts at the end of each UC Scout term (a.k.a. semester). If your child does not complete an AP course (or withdraws), their final grade of D, F, or W will be recorded on both transcripts.

If your student only completes one semester of a two-semester course, they can receive high school credit for the semester they completed but may not be fully prepared to take and pass the AP Exam.

Students with passing grades in AP classes will earn 0.5 high school credits per class per semester (without taking the AP Exam).

Taking an AP Exam for College Credit

For every AP course offering, there is a corresponding AP exam that must be completed and passed to be eligible for college credit. Completing and passing an AP Exam does not guarantee college credits will be awarded. Credits awarded are determined by the college your student enrolls with. Please research their preferred college(s) for guidelines on AP credit requirements.

To complete an exam, choose one of the following testing options:

  • Contact and arrange to complete the AP Exam at a local Utah high school. Double-check that the school has an exam-only option for the AP course(s) your student selects.
  • Take the Exam in California on-site at UC Scout. (LAU will not cover expenses for food, lodging, travel, or other fees.)

Note: AP Exams should be scheduled well in advance. For more information on costs and due dates, see the College Board 2025 AP Exam Fees and Exam Order Finalization web pages.

Students who take AP exams must pay all associated fees. However, LAU will reimburse the exam cost for students who pass any AP test with a score of 2 or higher. To be reimbursed, you’ll need to submit a receipt of payment and your child’s exam score.
