Career & Technical Education (CTE)
Your student can take classes tuition-free at one of the Utah technical colleges below, and earn high school credit from Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) in the process!
Technical Colleges and Locations
How It Works
Enrollment at any of the above technical colleges is tuition-free for LAU students in grades 11-12.
Participating in a CTE program counts towards your high school student’s required minimum of six classes per semester. Your student’s training hours will be added up and transferred to LAU as CTE or Elective credits.
If your student is interested in CTE, they should discuss the options with their LAU school counselor and get approval before enrolling at a technical college.
Once approved, your student should work directly with the technical college of their choice to enroll. Students are required to meet all application and admission guidelines as outlined by LAU and their chosen technical college.
FAQs
-
What are the eligibility requirements to attend a Utah technical college?
- Your student must be enrolled full-time at LAU in grade 11 or 12.
- They must have approval to participate in CTE from their LAU school counselor.
-
What costs are covered at technical colleges?
All technical colleges in Utah are tuition-free for students in grades 11-12 who reside in Utah. With that said, students are responsible for all travel, materials, books, and any other fees as determined by their chosen technical college.
-
Can my student receive high school credit for classes they take at a technical college?
Yes! At technical colleges, credit is awarded in the form of hours. For every 60 hours of technical training they complete, students will be awarded 0.5 CTE or Electives credits at LAU.
Students should contact our Independent Studies & Funded Electives Coordinator to receive credit for their training at a technical college.
-
Will technical college credits transfer to a college or 4-year university?
Credit earned in some programs at Utah technical colleges may transfer to other local colleges for college credit. Students should work directly with their technical college of choice to see what options are available for the program they choose.
Steps to Enroll in CTE
-
Step 1 - Talk with an LAU School Counselor
If your student is enrolling in a CTE program for the first time, they should meet with their LAU school counselor to discuss individual graduation plans and course recommendations.
For students who have previously taken CTE courses through LAU, this step is optional.
-
Step 2 - Review Your Local Technical College/CTE Program Offerings
Each technical college has different offerings and specialties. Please review the offerings at technical colleges near you and select the program that most interests your student.
Important note: All technical college classes are in person.
LAU will not pay for or reimburse travel, materials, books, or any other technical college fees. (The state of Utah does not allow us to pay fees or other expenses to our technical college partners.)
-
Step 3 - Apply for Enrollment at a Technical College
After your student selects a technical college and program, please work directly with that college to meet their admission and registration requirements.
Students are responsible for all communication and registration with their chosen technical college. Please encourage your student to review registration dates and deadlines carefully.
If the technical college your student chooses requires permission or a release from their high school, please contact our Independent Studies & Funded Electives Coordinator to request this.
-
Step 4 - Register for Independent Studies in SIS
For LAU to award high school credit for CTE courses, we require students to be registered for Independent Studies as a placeholder in SIS.
For each CTE course your student is taking, please register them for “LAU IS Elective” in the Registration tab of your parent SIS account.
-
Step 5 - Register for Technical College Courses
Students are responsible for registering for courses at their chosen technical college. Please follow all registration guidelines as outlined on the technical college’s website.
Need Help Enrolling in CTE Courses?
Students should work directly with their technical college to resolve any issues with applying or registering for CTE courses, or for help with transferring credits to another college or university.
For any other questions, please contact an LAU school counselor or our Independent Studies Coordinator.
