Early College at U of U
Your high school student can earn college credits and fulfill LAU’s graduation requirements simultaneously when they enroll in HSUP Dual Enrollment classes at the U of U.
The HSUP program allows students in grades 10-12 to take college-level courses. The program is designed for motivated students to enhance their high school curriculum and get a head start on a college degree. HSUP students may participate in any 1000 or 2000-level courses as long as they meet the prerequisites.
Students interested in participating in the HSUP program should discuss this with their LAU school counselor before enrolling at the U of U.
Upon LAU approval, students should work directly with the U of U to enroll. Students are required to meet all application and admission guidelines as outlined by LAU and the U of U.
*HSUP Dual Enrollment is synonymous with “Early College” or “Concurrent Enrollment” at other LAU college partners.
Get Started
First, review the Qualifications and FAQ sections on our Early College page.

FAQs
-
What are the eligibility requirements to be accepted into HSUP?
An applicant for HSUP Dual Enrollment must:
- Have successfully completed grade 9 and be in grades 10-12
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at LAU.
- Meet the minimum GPA requirement developed by the Credits and Admissions Committee as follows:
- Grade 12 (Seniors) - 3.2 GPA or higher

-
What costs are covered for each HSUP course?
LAU does not pay for or reimburse any early college-related costs for the U of U. However, our partnership with the U of U allows LAU students to receive a heavily discounted tuition rate, potentially saving them hundreds or even thousands of dollars on college.
Students are responsible for all HSUP expenses, including:
- $5 per credit hour cost of tuition
- $55 application fee
- Additional fees, supplies, and textbooks
-
How many HSUP courses can my student take?
- Grade 10 or first-year HSUP students can take up to 2 classes or 6 credits.
- Students who have successfully completed HSUP courses previously can take up to 3 classes or 12 credits.
- Please coordinate with a school counselor to determine the best course load.
-
Are HSUP classes held online or on campus?
HSUP Dual Enrollment courses are online and in-person. Please work directly with U of U to identify which classes are offered in the format that best suits your student.
-
How are grades and credits awarded for HSUP classes?
LAU adheres to state guidelines for converting college credits to high school credits. Please be sure to discuss your student’s academic plan with their LAU school counselor before registering for U of U HSUP courses to ensure their credits will transfer as expected.
Here are the general guidelines we use when converting college credits to high school credits:
- Early College classes worth 3 to 5 college credits = 1.0 high school credit
- Early College classes worth 0.5 to 2 college credits = 0.5 high school credits
Your student’s final grades for HSUP courses are recorded on both their high school and college transcripts. If your student does not successfully complete a college course (or withdraws), their final grade of D, F, or W will also be recorded on both transcripts.
Note: To receive high school credit, your student must submit a U of U transcript to LAU after each semester of HSUP classes.
Steps to Enroll in HSUP Classes
-
Step 1 - Talk with an LAU School Counselor
If your student is enrolling in U of U’s HSUP for the first time, they should meet with their LAU school counselor to discuss individual graduation plans and course recommendations.
For students who have previously taken HSUP courses through LAU, this step is optional.
-
Step 2 - Review U of U Requirements
Fulfill all U of U HSUP prerequisites and program eligibility requirements as outlined on the U of U High School University Program & Orientation web page.
-
Step 3 - Apply for Enrollment at U of U
Read and follow all instructions found in the Application & Deadline section of the U of U High School University Program & Orientation web page.
New HSUP applicants will be required to
- Complete the new student online application and pay the application fee
- Submit an official high school transcript by mail, in-person, or via one of the approved electronic services
- Submit the HSUP Parent Consent form
Students are responsible for meeting U of U registration requirements and must keep track of registration deadlines.
-
Step 4 - Select Courses in SIS
For LAU to award high school credit for HSUP courses, we require students to be registered for a placeholder course in SIS. The placeholder course is called "Early College Release" and can be found under the Electives tab.
In SIS, please register for one Early College Release per HSUP course your student wishes to take (up to 3 courses). Example: If they take two HSUP courses, they must be registered for two Early College Release placeholders.
-
Step 5 - Register for Courses through U of U
Registration for HSUP courses will be through the U of U. Follow all U of U registration instructions. Remember the following when registering:
- HSUP Dual Enrollment students are ordinarily restricted to enrollment in lower-division (1000 or 2000-level) courses.
- Registration for any higher-level courses must be pre-approved by the appropriate University department or unit responsible for the course.
- See HSUP Orientation Presentation to help your student explore and decide which classes are a good fit
- Work with an LAU school counselor to ensure HSUP courses also meet LAU graduation requirements
