Graduation Requirements

We recommend reviewing these notes for added context as you explore our overall graduation requirements:

• Students may take Early College or Career and Technical Education (CTE) through a local tech school to earn high school credits. Please work with an LAU school counselor if your student plans to take these types of courses.
• Unless otherwise noted, all of our courses add 0.5 credits toward your student’s graduation. 
• In most cases, we recommend taking the “A” version of a course in the fall semester and the “B” version in winter.
• You can view specific high school course descriptions on the Williamsburg Learning website.

At LAU, our leadership courses are the heart and soul of our program! These courses fulfill certain state requirements and must be completed to graduate from LAU. Specifically, students must complete the following:

• Personal Leadership A (0.5 of Computer Technology credit)
• Personal Leadership B (0.5 Fitness for Life credit)
• Social Leadership A (0.5 CTE credit)
• Social Leadership B (0.5 CTE credit)
• Professional Leadership (0.5 of Elective credit)
• Financial Leadership (0.5 General Financial Literacy credit)

Students must complete the following:

• HS Math 1 A/B, or both Algebra 1A* and Geometry A
• HS Math 2 A/B, or both Algebra 1B* and Geometry B
• HS Math 3 A/B, or Algebra 2*

Alternatively, students can complete Pre-Calculus A/B. Students who complete Pre-Calculus and one other math class on the above list only need 2 credits instead of 3.

A few other notes on math credits:

• Pre-Algebra is equivalent to 7th Grade Math & Intro to HS Math. None of these courses are eligible for high school credit.
• HS Math 1-3 are the only courses that can be taken in middle school to earn high school credit.
• A student who has completed Algebra 2 (which is not currently offered at LAU) does not need to complete any other HS math courses.

*These courses are only offered in the self-paced format.

Students must complete the following:

• 2.0 credits of foundational science courses (which include Earth Science A/B, Biology A/B, Chemistry A/B, and Physics A/B)
• 1.0 credit of an additional foundational or any other science course (such as Astronomy A/B)

Note: Many selective colleges want to see the following science courses on an applicant’s transcript: Biology A/B, Chemistry A/B, and Physics A/B.

Students must complete the following:

• U.S. History A/B
• Government & Economics A (0.5 credit) & B (0.5 credit) or AP U.S. Government & Politics (1 credit)
• World Civilizations (0.5 credit) and Geography & World Events (0.5 credit)

A few other notes on social studies credits:

• The Utah state-required Civics Exam is included and taken in Government & Economics B.
• In general, we recommend that students take World Civilizations and Geography & World Events during 11th or 12th grade.

Students must complete the following:

• Writing & Rhetoric A/B (LA 9)
• American Literature A/B (LA 10)
• Political Literature (LA 11A) (0.5 credit) & Short Stories (LA 11B) (0.5 credit) 
• World Literature A/B (LA 12)

Students must complete the following…

• Mind & Body Stewardship (0.5 Health credit)
• Personal Leadership B (0.5 Fitness for Life credit)

Plus one additional credit from the following courses:

• Independent PE (0.5 credit)
• Outdoor Adventures (0.5 PE credit)

Note: Students may take Independent PE multiple times.

Students can choose from the following courses to fulfill the 1.5 credits requirement:

• Independent Fine Arts (0.5 credit)
• 3D Design: Modeling, Animation & Printing (0.5 credit)
• Digital Art & Graphic Design (0.5 credit)

A few other notes on fine arts credits:

• Students may take Independent Fine Arts multiple times. 
• In some cases, design courses can be counted as either Fine Arts or CTE credits.

Students can choose from the following courses to fulfill the 5.5 credits requirement:

• Second Language
• Independent Study
• Funded Approved Vendor Electives (FAVE)
• Adventure Fridays
• Any other courses from the Williamsburg Learning Electives list

A few other notes on elective credits:

• Any excess credits in any other subject area can be used to fulfill the elective credit requirement (upon approval from an LAU school counselor).
• Many selective colleges want to see 2.0 credits of a second language on an applicant’s transcript. Second Language courses are counted as elective credits.

Students must complete the following:

• Social Leadership A (0.5 CTE credit)
• Social Leadership B (0.5 CTE credit)

These courses fulfill the requirements for CTE credits in Utah. Optionally, your student can also complete any of the following for additional CTE credit: 

• 3D Design: Modeling, Animation, and Printing (0.5 credit)
• Digital Art & Graphic Design* (0.5 credit)
• Game Design & Development* (0.5 credit)
• Python Programming (0.5 credit)

Note: The optional courses above can also be counted as elective credits and are found under "EdTech" in SIS registration. See the Williamsburg Learning Electives page to learn more about these courses.

Students must complete the following:

• Personal Leadership A (0.5 credit)

This course fulfills the requirements for Computer Technology credit in Utah.

Students must complete the following:

• Financial Leadership (0.5 credit)

This course fulfills the requirements for General Financial Literacy credit in Utah.
