Middle School Registration
For After Your Student’s Application is Accepted
Registration in a Nutshell
You’ll register for your student’s courses in our Student Information Services (SIS) system by following the steps below. For tips on choosing the right courses for your student, please review the other sections on this page.
How to Register for Courses in SIS:
- Sign in to your SIS parent account.
- Under “My Students,” click the tab with your student’s name on it.
- Click on the “Registration” tab.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to select your student’s courses in each subject. We recommend registering for both the fall and winter semesters at the same time. By default, SIS is designed to show courses for your student's grade. To see additional classes that may pertain to them, click "Show All Courses" toward the bottom of the screen.
Note: You can ignore all tuition prices shown in SIS, unless you plan to self-pay for a particular course.
- Once you’ve selected your student’s courses, move through the final confirmation steps. That’s it!
For help with any of the above steps, please contact our Registrar.

Our online courses are offered in partnership with Williamsburg Learning. Williamsburg’s award-winning online courses are available in live, self-paced, or independent study formats:
- Live courses are best for engaging, interactive discussions with mentors and classmates.
- Self-paced courses are best for students who need more flexibility in their schedule.
- Independent Study courses let students earn credit for completing studies with a third-party curriculum provider.
You can find the full list of online middle school courses we offer from Williamsburg Learning here .
In-Person Adventure Courses
-

Our popular Adventure Fridays courses come in two versions: Outdoor Adventures (offered in the fall semester) and Leadership Adventures (offered in winter semester):
- Outdoor Adventures includes activities like hiking, rock climbing, rowing, and more to increase students’ confidence and grit.
- Leadership Adventures includes activities like service projects, simulations, museum trips, and more to foster students’ leadership skills.

Independent Studies
-
Show more...
Independent Studies courses let students use a third-party curriculum to fulfill the learning requirements of (and earn academic credit for) certain courses, including both core classes and electives.
Please visit our Independent Studies page for more details.
Funded Approved LAU Math
-
Show more...
Funded Approved LAU Math allows students to use Mr. D Math or Teaching Textbooks curriculums for math credit. We cover the cost of these third-party curriculums, but parents provide the at-home help and support instead of an LAU mentor.
Like our online Williamsburg math courses, students will complete assignments in Canvas in addition to lessons, quizzes, and tests from the curriculum provider.

- As shown in the schedules above, all live-online class sessions are 50 minutes long. Math courses are held Monday-Thursday; other live online courses rotate on a block schedule with classes on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. In-person adventure courses are held on Fridays.
- For simplicity, the sample schedules above show only our core online classes and in-person adventure courses. In addition to those, please remember to plan for any Funded Approved Vendor Electives (FAVE), Independent Studies, or other electives your student wishes to take.
- You can view more details, including mentors for each section, in the Williamsburg Course Schedules document. While this document can be helpful for planning your student’s preferred sections, only SIS has the most up-to-date info about which sections have seats available.
- All class times, mentors, and other course details are subject to change depending on enrollment numbers.
Is your child new to online learning or looking to sharpen their study skills? We highly recommend registering them for our Study Skills course! This one-week sprint—held prior to the start of fall classes—will set your student up for an easier, more successful school year.

When do I need to register my student for courses?
As listed in the table below, we have multiple deadlines for registration depending on the time of year. You will only be able to access registration after your student has been accepted at LAU; registration for the next upcoming fall and winter semesters typically opens on the first Monday in February.
Date Accepted to LAU Deadline to Register During Open Enrollment (January) to the first day of Fall registration 14 days from open of Fall registration First day of Fall registration to June 30 14 days from date of acceptance July 1 to July 31 7 days from date of acceptance August 1 or later 48 hours from date of acceptance Please note: Students who are not registered within the timeframes listed above will be at risk of losing their spot at LAU. To help avoid this, we’ll email you a registration reminder as soon as your student’s application is approved.
-
Can my student register for classes on their own?
No, students can’t register for themselves in SIS. Only parents have access to the Registration tab from their SIS parent account.
-
Is registration first-come, first-served?
Yes, registration for admitted students is on a first-come, first-served basis. We have a limited number of seats in all courses, and we do not reserve seats for returning students. However, we always notify current families when registration opens for a new semester.
-
Can I change my student’s classes after they’re registered?
Yes. You can add or drop courses from your child’s schedule until August 30 for the fall semester and January 17 for the winter semester. This includes switching class sections or changing between honors and classic versions.
-
Can I register my student part-time?
No, all students must register full-time at LAU. Students in middle school must register for at least 5 classes to be considered full-time.
-
Can my middle school student take high school classes?
Yes, in some cases. If you have an advanced student in 8th grade, you can request permission from our registrar to enroll them in a high school math, writing, or foreign language course. Middle school students who take high school math can receive high school credit (pending approval from LAU).

After I register my student for courses, what’s next?
Once your student is registered, all that’s left is preparing for the first day of school! To help with this, we highly encourage you to review our How to Prepare for School page and On-Demand Parent Orientation videos. We’ll also email you and your student with information about student orientation assignments they will need to complete in Canvas (our online learning management system).
Please note: All course selections are reviewed and approved by LAU’s school counselors. We will let you know if any of your student’s courses need to be adjusted.
